HBA of Bucks and Montgomery Counties
Save a Tree Program

Background

In, 2005, the Home Builders Association of Bucks and Montgomery Counties (HBA) began the “Save a tree; Plant a tree” grant program to promote tree planting in our local communities. As an association we recognize trees have a significant impact on the environment and add to the charm of a community. In partnership with area municipalities, the HBA offered financial resources for the purpose of creating greater tree canopy coverage in local parks and public areas. The program is divided into two subcategories: municipal challenge grants and planting resources for builders. In the first year of the program, our association saved over a dozen mature trees that were in the path of development and were then transplanted to a nearby community park. We also awarded grants to five municipalities in the Bucks and Montgomery County region. Past President Joe Gartner asserts Tree planting and preservation should be a vital component of any effort to beautify and enhance our communities.

Planting Resources For Developers

In 2005, HBA member Jim Moulton dedicated his resources for the Save-a-Tree; Plant-a-Tree program. Participating builders will designate a site for the program. Trees from this site are relocated to a community park, business complex, open space, or other appropriate Area. Volunteering developers recognize the need to develop vibrant communities and enhance the quality of Life for residents. These developers, along with the HBA, dedicate skills, time, equipment and finances to the success of this portion of the project. Municipal Challenge Grant The 2005 “Save-a-Tree; Plant-a-Tree” Municipal Challenge Grant program was made possible through the combined efforts of the HBA and State Senator Robert Wonderling (R-24). Senator Wonderling awarded the HBA a $10,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development grant program. This grant supplemented the HBA funds for the municipal program. Grant Applications were distributed to every municipality within the two county area. Municipalities were required to provide matching funding, as part of the program. The HBA received numerous grant applications. And, after reviewing each application, the Association was able to award five municipalities with funding to complete a project in their community.
